Folks may know this already, but so lovely I can't keep myself from sharing; the blue color in blue jay feathers is "structural". It is not pigmentation. The feather looks blue because of the scattering of light by modified, microscopic structures in the feather. If you backlight a blue feather, the blue should disappear.
